This month's topic: There are a host of scientific areas that require the measurement of very small masses or forces. At the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) we have been figuring out how to measure these tiny masses and forces using many different approaches from chemistry, physics, biology and materials science. This talk will describe some of the ways these kinds of measurements are made and applied, and highlight some nifty tricks that allow us to confirm the absolute accuracy and uncertainty of our measurements.
Our speaker: Gordie Shaw started his education working in the plasma etching lab at Skidmore college. After a couple of years working in the semiconductor industry at EKC Technology (now DuPont electronic chemicals) he completed a PhD in chemistry at the University of…
